Beneath the Stars

We’ve been slowly making our way through the Remastered episodes of Season 1 of Next Gen. Its pretty much a thing in my house, what with our having seen the whole series at least twice through now, that the show only gets consistently good halfway through Season 3.

But oh my is it hilarious to watch Season 1. Its just so hokey and ridiculous and I love it~

We watched Haven tonight, aka the first episode that Lwaxana Troi shows up. So I pretty much spent the whole time cackling away. It manages to have soap opera levels of melodrama, what with a sulking Will and a stiff, overacting Deanna (she’s just so stilted and formal compared to later, ESPECIALLY with her mother) - but Lwaxana gliding around being fabulous, and Data being intrigued by everything, made it worth watching.

And Deanna called Riker Bill - bahahahahaha. Pure gold~ (Or should that be Pure gold-pressed Latinum?)

  • Star Trek TNG - Alternate Theme

frontier001:

Guys?  My fellow Trekkies?  People?

Some of you know this already.  Some of you don’t.  But this song was almost the theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation.

No, I am not kidding.  I’m serious.  It really was.  They almost used this as the theme to TNG.  It’s even on the first soundtrack, the one with the music from the pilot “Encounter at Farpoint” if you don’t believe me.

Yes, this song was almost the TNG theme.

Seriously.

I mean it’s not horrible horrible, right?  But it’s… it’s not the TNG theme, you know?

It really is very 1980s though.  I mean, you’d have to do 80s visuals with it, you know?  Not just text.  Picard would have to come on horseback galloping over the top of a hill.  Riker would have to do one of those half-turn-and-smile manuvers.  Troi would have shake her hair like a shampoo commercial.  Worf would have to do a toothy growl as he chopped wood with a bat’leth.  Beverly would have to be fixing Wesley’s uniform collar or something before turning to the camera.  Geordi would do the two-handed point-and-grin like Guy in the end opening credits from “Galaxy Quest” and Data would totally be painting a portrait of spot before spot knocked over the paints…

Reblogging for the commentary.

Dear lord, I wish I had the skills to make that happen.

SOMEONE make it happen!

STEAL THIS IDEA: STAR TREK USING A NEW CAST EACH WEEK

steal-this-idea:

Star Trek is supposed to be about mankind’s expansion to the stars and its inherent wonders, mysteries, and dangers. The trouble is, the sense of danger is lost because of what I call “Invincible Ship Syndrome”. The Starship Enterprise (or Deep Space 9 or Voyager) cannot be destroyed or else the…

While I definitely get where you’re coming from with this I must say I disagree entirely.

Yes, the premise of Star Trek is exploring the galaxy, but everyone knows that it’s not just about exploring space but is instead about exploring humanity through the characters. Science fiction as a whole is at its best when its used as a vessel to explore an aspect of human nature and illuminate it for the audience.

Star Trek, to me and a lot of people I know, is really all about the beloved characters. Yes the ships are awesome, and everyone likes a good space battle now and then, but that’s only window dressing for the adventures of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Picard, Data, Worf, Sisko, Kira, Odo, Janeway, the Doctor, Seven, Archer, T’Pol, Trip, and all the rest of them. And yes, there’s a reason I picked these characters out, because off the top of my head these are the characters who I’d wager were most easily recognised and best represent Star Trek. These are the ones who I’d say have been used to explore humanity the most.

And the thing is, we hate it when they kill off important characters in Star Trek -

(SPOILERS, but for like ten years ago…)

Whether it’s Kirk dying in Generations, or Data in Nemesis, or Trip in the final awful episode of Enterprise. Or Tasha Yar and Jadzia Dax. Everyone usually hates it and people still get annoyed or upset over it like twenty years later!

I agree that in terms of storytelling killing off characters and providing a sense of danger is important. But Star Trek characters are a lot like superheroes. Just as when Superman or Captain America get killed off, everyone gets so annoyed that they end up bringing them back to life.

And I’d argue that the best Star Trek episodes use science fiction as a vessel to tell a story about humanity - The City on the Edge of Forever, Space Seed, The Inner Light, The Visitor, Far Beyond the Stars, The Measure of a Man, In the Pale Moonlight, It’s Only a Paper Moon, Chain of Command, Family, The Offspring, Latent Image, Someone to Watch Over Me, Equinox, Similitude, Borderland/Cold Station 12/The Augments, even the Best of Both Worlds - none of these would have been improved by killing someone off! In fact, Star Trek is often as its best when it deals with the aftermath of a traumatic event (Paper Moon and Family come to mind).

And yeah, there are more action heavy episodes that could perhaps benefit from a little more jeopardy, but I don’t think that killing off main characters is something that anyone really wants. Star Trek isn’t a dystopian future, it’s closer to a utopian one. People want to know that their heroes are going to triumph at the end, we want a happy ending. And frankly I think TV today needs more of that, not less. We’ve gone so much into the ‘dark and realistic’ and ‘nitty gritty’ in today’s media that it’s getting a little bit tiresome. What’s wrong with heroes saving the day?

So that post about non-old-made-up Dean from Supernatural got me thinking about all the excellent old-person make-up they did on Star Trek over the years.

Almost everyone was turned into an old person at some point!

Here’s a little selection (seriously, I’d forgotten how often they’d done it - and then turning crew members into Klingons or Borg, or other aliens, so awesome~)

kotbt:

Before I begin I would like to make it clear that this is not to be meant as an insult to Wil Wheaton, who I am huge fan of. The issues I have with Wesley Crusher are not his fault but the fault of TNGs writers.

That being said, can SOMEONE please explain to me how 14-year-oldJake Sisko acting like a ten-year-old is somehow less annoying than 15-year-old Wesley Crusher trying to act like an adult? I mean holy fucking shitballs, Jake is only about 30% as annoying as Wesley. How is that even possible? I get that the feel of TNG and the feel of DS9 are quite different and thus one might support having a child character while the other does not. I also understand that TNG at the time was really trying to find its footing while DS9 had the advantage of playing off of the success of TNG. Despite that, I still do not understand how Wesley is that much more annoying than a teenager who acts about two-thirds of his actual age. Don’t get me wrong, Jake is still annoying. However I feel that 14-year-olds are supposed to be annoying so it’s okay. But Wesley… Wesley has a gift for pissing me off, and it gets worse every time he’s right.

The simplest explanation, in my opinion of course, is that the reason Wesley is SO annoying is because he is constantly saving the ship/saving the day. He’s not just a teenager acting like an adult, he’s a freakish child prodigy who is apparently the only one out of a THOUSAND people - including the supposed best minds in all of Starfleet - on the Enterprise who has the answers/is able to save the day. Geordi and Data, the chief Engineer and unique android, go to him for advice? Seriously? We’re supposed to believe that?

I rarely found Jake annoying, mostly I just giggled at his hilarious outfits. And the difference is that Jake is written as just a kid. He’s mucking around and getting in trouble, going to school and hanging out with his best friend. And unlike Wesley, who grows into a mini Starfleet officer, Jake just plain old grows up. It always makes me a bit teary, watching both earlier and later seasons with Jake, to see how much he grows over the course of the series - not just height wise, haha, but as a person.

Poor Wesley on the other hand, gets knocked down a peg or two, but we don’t really see the same journey.

And as much as I love Wil Wheaton the show got a hell of a lot better when Wes went off to Starfleet and stopped saving the ship all the time.
